Helping small institutions save treasured collections
What Not To Do
Don’t waste table space on items that can be dried elsewhere. These fabrics could have been line-dried, freeing up more table space for books or other items which need a flat surface to dry.
This textile, in addition to taking up flat table space, is covering a wet book, preventing it from drying properly. The books in the background have also not been placed in proper position for air-drying.
This book suffered from significant mold growth from improper drying techniques. In addition, the spine is mangled because it was handled too roughly during salvage. Wet, deteriorated leather is one of the more fragile materials one might deal with during disaster salvage.
